Rebecca in the News
People danced as musicians played in Oakland's Uptown District Sunday. The pride celebration came after an effort spearheaded by councilmember and mayoral candidate Rebecca Kaplan.
Food unites us all. Rebecca Kaplan, Oakland City Council member, is campaigning for Mayor with this basic precept in mind. Economic recovery, fiscal sustainability and better public health are all predicated on Oaklanders' willingness to accept a “sound food policy.”
But making a comeback in these tough financial times seems unlikely. Oakland Councilwoman Rebecca Kaplan says certain parts of the economy are starting to turn around but not enough.
"We have a very high unemployment rate in Oakland," she said. "We have to take very serious steps to address that. Part of that requires we notice sectors that are growing. "
Lucky for Rizzo, Kaplan says the food industry is growing in Oakland.
Making food a priority at the top of City government and through our partnership with other agencies can dramatically improve public health. Too many Oaklanders do not have convenient, affordable access to nutritious food and expanding community gardens, adding grocery stores, and improving transportation will promote healthy living.
When Kaplan announced her candidacy on June 30, she said she wanted to create jobs for Oakland residents. "I want to make this a city where people can work and play without fear," she said. Kaplan said she wants to streamline the process for city permits and make city government "more responsive, effective and efficient."
Councilmember Rebecca Kaplan said the new shuttle showed not only another green economic development success for the city, but also the importance of working together with others in the community such as AC Transit, which is operating the service under a two-year contract with the city.
"It is a good day for Oakland and for working together," Kaplan said.
